Netflix inks deal with Mamelodi FC Ladies
African women’s football shines bright & Netflix knows it ! 📺⚽️
Last Sunday, the 🇿🇦 Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. Ladies defeated the SPORTING CLUB CASABLANCA 3-0. The game accumulated 181K views on Youtube 📲 (this is not a competition but the Replay of the African Football League's Finals had 50k views 😏) and the Sundowns Ladies brought home a lofty $400K prize 💰.
Today, a Netflix documentary on the African Queens of Football just dropped. The documentary was produced by Cape Town-based Fell and Company.
The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ victory is the latest in South Africa’s streak across team sports this year. Over honourable mentions include :
🏆🏉 A back-to-back Rugby World Cup
🏆 ⚽️ The Mamelodi Sundowns’ men team won the first Africa Football League
Now who are the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and why are they a sign that investors should not neglect African women’s football ? 🔍
The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team was founded in 2009. Within four years (FOUR!) the team became dominant in the Hollywoodbets Women’s League.
🥇 Currently, the Sundowns Ladies are the most titled team with 5 titles. They had also won the inaugural Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League in 2021 and were runners-up last year.
The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, just as the Mamelodi Sundowns FC, are represented by Roc Nation Sports International and are sponsored by the likes of PUMA Group and Hyundai Automotive South Africa.
📝 They are effectively the blueprint to creating an African women’s football super-team, and there’s growing competition !
In the final, the Sundowns Ladies faced off the Sporting Club Casablanca, another recently created privately-owned club.
🇲🇦 The Sporting Club Casablanca was founded in 2019 and is already putting the spotlight on itself on and off the field. As runner-ups, they brought home $250K in prize money. They were supported by ICE Maroc and have previously signed deals with other local private companies such as DIAMANTINE Maroc and Bigdil Maroc. 💰
